Downloading & Installing Firefox Extensions
Several people download this extension every day. The download works. If you are having problems installing this, or any other extension, please follow the steps below before emailing me or bashing the extension on message boards.
Sometimes I fall behind for a new version of Firefox, if this is the case feel free to send me a (friendly) reminder. If the below steps still don't solve your problem, you are welcome to email me for help.
Installing Firefox Extensions:
- Go to the download page and click on the link for the version you wish to install. I always suggest the latest version.
- After clicking the download link, you will likely have a little bar appear at the top of the webpage. It will be gray and should look something like the image on the right. You can click the image for a larger view.
- The bar mentioned in the previous step will tell you that Firefox prevented seopen.com from installing software on your computer. You'll need to click on the "Edit Options..." button on the far-right of the bar.
- The small window that pops up (as seen on the right) is a list of sites that you have decided to trust to install software on your computer through Firefox. I can promise you that this extension is not evil, this extension has been installed thousands of times and you won't find any complaints as to its intent. So it is OK to add "seopen.com" to your list of trusted sites. If you'd rather not "trust" this site, you can still install the extension using the instructions below.
- After adding seopen.com to your list of trusted sites, click the "OK" button to be returned to the page and the gray bar should be gone.
- Again, click on the download link and wait a few seconds. Another box should pop up. After a few seconds with this box visible, the "Install" button will become active. Click this button to begin the installation process.
- Once the installation begins, the box from the last step will dis appear, replaced by the "Extensions" menu where once complete, you will see a message like "Success! You must restart your browser to complete the installation."
- Close Firefox and reopen. The extension should now be installed. SEOpen's features are accessed by right-clicking on an open area of a web page.
An alternate method of installing Firefox extensions directly from a website is to download them and install them from your computer. You may use this method if you can not get the more conventional method to work, if you want to view the source before you install it, or if you like to keep backups of your extensions.
Installing Firefox Extensions (alternate method):
- Go to the download page and right-click on the link for the version you wish to install (I always suggest the latest version) and select "Save Link As...". Choose a directory to save the extension to and click "Save".
- Optional:You can now view the extension's source by extracting the "seopenXX.xpi" (where "XX" is similar to the version number). With some operating systems you can just right-click on the .xpi and choose extract; others you might need to change the extension from .xpi to .zip, then extract it. Somewhere inside the extracted extension, you'll find "seopen.jar", this is just another archive format. With Linux you can simply extract the jar also, I've never tried to do this with another OS, so I'm not sure about the procedure.
- Now that the .xpi is saved to your computer, you just need to install it. Open Firefox and push "Ctrl+o". This will open a box; navigate to where you saved "seopenXX.xpi". Linux users may need to choose "All Files" in this box to be able to see the .xpi; "All Files" should be the default for MS Windows users. Double click "seopenXX.xpi".
- A box will appear where after a few seconds, the "Install" button will become active. Click this button and the installation will begin.Once the installation begins, the box from the last step will disappear, replaced by the "Extensions" menu where once complete, you will see a message like "Success! You must restart your browser to complete the installation."
- Close Firefox and reopen. The extension should now be installed. SEOpen's features are accessed by right-clicking on an open area of a web page.
